A new €3.5 million marina in Nydri, on the Ionian island of Lefkada, has officially opened to boost maritime tourism in the region. The facility is expected to attract more yacht owners and visitors while supporting local economic development.

Nydri is a new 73 berth marina designed to host vessels up to 15-metre in length. The marina was completed under the Interreg VI-A Greece-Italy programme, which supports increased marine tourism in the Ionian Island.
During the inauguration ceremony, Deputy Maritime Minister Stefanos Gkikas, stated, “This project marks a vital development that will foster prosperity not only in Nydri but across the entire island of Lefkada.”
Gkikas also emphasised the significance of infrastructure upgrades in northwestern Greece to remain competitive with neighbouring destinations like Croatia, Montenegro and Albania. “It is crucial for the Ionian Islands to experience such significant growth in maritime tourism,” Gkikas added.
Lefkada already benefits from strong maritime connections with destinations such as Corfu and Thesprotia, but officials believe the new infrastructure will help further strengthen its position.
The minister added, “We are committed to promoting insularity, both within Greece and at the European level. We hope that the next programming period will introduce a dedicated programme to support island regions.”
Additional marinas are in progress on the island of Lefkada, including a 100-berth marina in Vassiliki. Plans are also under discussion for two major projects on the mainland and surrounding islands such as a 400-berth marina near Palairos harbour and a large-scale 800+ berth facility at Vliho Bay, which could see investments of up to €50 million.
The new marina at Nydri represents a step forward in expanding Greece’s marine tourism infrastructure, particularly in the Ionian Islands. With more facilities being developed, the region is positioning itself as a premier yachting destination in the eastern Mediterranean.
