Navajo Lake Marina in New Mexico has invested $4 million USD in new infrastructure ahead of the 2025 boating season. The upgrade includes adding over 170 slips across four dock sections. The large-scale project follows severe storm damage in August 2024.

The storm on 21 August 2024 brought winds exceeding 80 miles per hour that severely damaged three of the oldest docks in the marina. Originally constructed in the 1960s, the 100, 200, and 300 boathouses were declared totalled, as well as a portion of the 800 dock. In response, marina staff worked through the winter to complete the construction of four new boathouses in time for spring.

The four newly completed docks feature modern layouts and increased capacity. Both the 100 and 200 docks now offer 43 slips each, replacing the previous 38 and 27 slips, respectively. Enhancements include 8-feet wide centre walkways and 3-feet wide fingers for dual-sided boat access. The upgraded section of the 800 dock now includes 30 slips beneath a newly installed roof, with 12-feet wide centre walkways and expanded spacing for larger vessels.

In addition, four new slips were added to the 1000 dock, bringing the total number of new slips to over 170. Despite the expansion, the marina maintains adequate manoeuvring space between and around all docks for smooth navigation.

All docks were designed and built by Meeco Sullivan, a U.S. dock construction company. The new structures were fabricated in Oklahoma and were transported to Navajo Lake and installed by the marina’s own maintenance crew.

The upgraded slips range from 7 to 23-metre (24 to 75-feet) in length and are primarily covered. Other features include higher rooflines, wider walkways, ADA-compliant design and updated safety details such as twist-lock receptacles and GFCI breakers.

Environmentally, the new docks are fitted with polyethylene-encapsulated flotation units, a sustainable alternative to the exposed styrofoam previously used.

The current upgrades bring the total investment in marina improvements to $20 million USD over the past decade.

With construction nearing completion, the marina is preparing to welcome visitors to a fully upgraded facility for what is expected to be a successful 2025 boating season.
