Marina Gouvia in the Ionian Sea has recently completed a redevelopment, upgrading its capacity and visitor experience. The multi-million-euro project was led by marina owner D-Marin in collaboration with SF Marina’s floating dock system.
Marina Gouvia’s modernisation project
Marina Gouvia is a yachting hub in the Ionian Sea, located 7.5-kilometre north of Corfu Town on the island’s east coast. A redevelopment project has transformed the marina’s appeal, offering upgraded dining, shopping and leisure areas for both permanent and transient guests.
Marina owner D-Marin launched a modernisation project in 2023 to increase berthing capacity and improve visitor amenities. The company collaborated with SF Marina and consulting engineer Marnet S.A. to design and execute the project in two phases.
Phase one: new floating dock system
The first phase, completed in summer 2023, included the replacement of all existing piers within Marina Gouvia. A total of 456-metre of SF Marina Type 1030 and 1140 floating precast concrete pontoons were installed.
The new steel-reinforced dock sections are virtually unsinkable, provide exceptional stability and are secured with chain and concrete anchors. The dock sections minimise lateral movement while offering a clean, uncluttered appearance.
Phase two: expansion and new berthing facilities
Phase two further expanded the marina with a 120-metre aluminium frame pier and 425-metre of SF Marina’s Type 1140 and 1240 pontoons. Designed to withstand commercial port conditions, the 4-metre-wide Type 1240 sections offer full-service berthing for vessels up to 70-metre in length. Their unprecedented mass and unique structure serve a dual function of acting as a breakwater for the marina.
Increased capacity and enhanced facilities
To minimise disruption to marina operations, the 73 pontoons and anchor assemblies were preassembled at SF Marina’s Porto Lagos, Greece facility. Once transported by truck, the entire installation was completed within just two weeks. After the completion of both phases, Marina Gouvia can now accommodate up to 1,350 boats.
